Movie Review Weekly Roundup: January 30 – February 5, 2022

Charade (1963) starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

The following is part of a weekly compilation of movie reviews from The Buzz Track staff. These movies were watched in the previous week, and the reviews were originally posted on Letterboxd.

Cash on Demand (1961)

DIRECTOR: Quentin Lawrence.

MPAA RATING: Unrated
GENRES: Crime, Drama, Mystery.

★★★★☆ | WATCHED: January 30, 2022.

After watching this movie, I now have one more non-traditional Christmas story to add to my list of favorite holiday films. The story centers around a robbery in an English suburb bank on December 23rd. The movie features Peter Cushing in the lead role as the nervous bank manager.

Charade (1963)

DIRECTOR: Stanley Donen.
WRITERS: Peter Stone, Marc Behm.
MPAA RATING: Passed
GENRES: Mystery, Comedy, Romance.
LENGTH: 1h 53min.
LANGUAGE: English, French.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: January 31, 2022.

Here is a story of mystery blended with a bit of flirtatious romance. It features Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. I love watching their movies. I am drawn more to this version of the story than its reboot, The Truth About Charlie (2002). I appreciate the banter in this movie. It is not always subtle, but the delivery is perfect.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018)

DIRECTOR: Terry Gilliam.
WRITERS: Terry Gilliam, Tony Grisoni (screenplay), Miguel de Cervantes (book).
MPAA RATING: Unrated
GENRES: Adventure, Comedy, Drama.
LENGTH: 2h 12min.
LANGUAGE: English, Spanish.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★☆☆ | WATCHED: February 1, 2022.

Without watching any of the marketing videos, I went into my viewing of this movie with blind faith. Years ago, I watched Lost In La Mancha and figured Terry Gilliam finally finished the story. I did not expect the entire movie to be a semi-biographical story about a director losing his mind while trying to find the needed inspiration to finish the production of his Don Quixote movie.

The Sisters Brothers (2018)

DIRECTOR: Jacques Audiard.
WRITERS: Jacques Audiard, Thomas Bidegain (screenplay), Patrick DeWitt (book).
MPAA RATING: R – Viewer discretion is advised.
GENRES: Crime, Drama, Western.
LENGTH: 2h 2min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: February 2, 2022.

Bounty hunter brothers are out on a cross-country trip striking off the names of people wanted dead by their boss. Is this movie a road trip story or a hitman-for-hire story? Either way, it’s an enjoyable trip through the 19th Century northwestern United States.

The Greatest Showman (2017)

DIRECTOR: Michael Gracey.
WRITERS: Jenny Bicks, Bill Condon.
MPAA RATING: PG
GENRES: Musical, Drama, Biography.
LENGTH: 1h 45min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: February 3, 2022.

Pop musicals are not intended to be factually accurate. I am aware P.T. Barnum is not an ideal human being overflowing with honest integrity. With it being said, The Greatest Showman is nothing more than a fun time for a sugar-coated pop musical. If I want factual accuracy about the circus legend, I would go track down and read a biography book or watch a documentary movie about him.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)

DIRECTOR: Sam Liu.
WRITERS: James Krieg (screenplay), Brian Augustyn & Mike Mignola (graphic novel).
MPAA RATING: R – Viewer discretion is advised.
GENRES: Animation, Action, Adventure.
LENGTH: 1h 18min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: February 4, 2022.

Based upon the graphic novel co-written by the creator of the Hellboy series, Gotham by Gaslight sends our beloved vigilante back in time to the late Victorian era Gotham City. Sure, the movie is animated, but it’s not exactly a kid-friendly story with Jack the Ripper murdering his way through town as its villain.

Night Moves (2013)

DIRECTOR: Kelly Reichardt.
WRITERS: Jonathan Raymond, Kelly Reichardt.
MPAA RATING: R – Viewer discretion is advised.
GENRES: Drama, Thriller.
LENGTH: 1h 52min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: February 5, 2022.

Night Moves is the second Kelly Reichardt movie I have seen; the first one is Wendy and Lucy. I highly enjoyed watching this independent movie. The entire story is about three environmentalists who join together to blow up a hydroelectric dam in protest of excessive waste of natural resources. The story is a no-frills character study about those who believe their actions will resonate loudly with a grand message only to doubt they even made a whimper.
