I am not part of the target audience for this movie. I was still holding out for either a moment of genuine enlightenment or maybe a tiny spark of an emotional connection with one or more of the characters. The movie is a well-told story and all. However, it did not completely land on the mark for me.

The Lure (2015)

GENRES: Drama, Fantasy, Musical.
LENGTH: 1h 32min.
LANGUAGE: Polish.

Now this movie happens to strike the right kind of weird for me. Who knew a Polish musical set in the ’80s about two young sirens hired to be in a musical nightclub act would be so entertaining? The icing on the cake for me is seeing Tryton be a lead singer for a punk rock band. Come on! He is the son of a Greek god and a ruler in the ocean. But on land, he becomes a music icon that represents anarchy against the establishment. I love it all.

Why can’t all romantic comedies be like this one? I actually laughed out loud several times, which I don’t always do while watching comedies.

Hooper (1978)

DIRECTOR: Hal Needham.
WRITERS: Thomas Rickman, Bill Kerby.
MPAA RATING: PG
GENRES: Action, Comedy.
LENGTH: 1h 39min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.

Burt Reynolds is an aging stunt man who doubles for Adam West. This movie can be viewed as a dominant precursor to the character dynamics of the main characters in Quentin Tarantino’s Once A Time… In Hollywood. Only with this movie, there is more nostalgia and feeling that doesn’t feel like a rehash of other movies. I truly enjoyed watching Hooper and will probably watch it a few more times.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

DIRECTOR: Quentin Tarantino.
WRITERS: Quentin Tarantino.
MPAA RATING: R – Viewer discretion is advised.
GENRES: Drama.
LENGTH: 2h 41min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★☆☆ | WATCHED: February 24, 2022.

As much fun as this movie can be, it would be in your best interest to catch up on a few other films beforehand, such as Hooper (1978) or The Stunt Man (1980), for example. I don’t think Once Upon a Time is one of Tarantino’s best films, but still worth watching just for the fun of it.

The Underworld Story (1950)

DIRECTOR: Cy Endfield.
WRITERS: Henry Blankfort (script), Cy Endfield (adaptation), Craig Rice (story).
MPAA RATING: Passed
GENRES: Crime, Drama, Film Noir.
LENGTH: 1h 31min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★☆☆☆ | WATCHED: February 25, 2022.

Toxic masculinity, gaslighting, and murder in a small town with rich people and a newspaper company that cannot afford to pay the bills unless the new editor convinces the legacy owner to lower the paper’s standards to become a few notches above being another gossip rag. The end.

White Heat (1949)

DIRECTOR: Raoul Walsh.
WRITERS: Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts (script), Virginia Kellogg (story).
MPAA RATING: Unrated – Viewer discretion is advised.
GENRES: Action, Crime, Drama.
LENGTH: 1h 54min.
LANGUAGE: English.
WHERE TO RENT: JustWatch or Prime Video.
★★★★☆ | WATCHED: February 26, 2022.

Such a great jailbreak and money heist movie that I enjoy watching time and again.
